Sermon Application Questions

1. Take a minute to think back on the last few days of your life. Considering that the Spirit “directs the direction of your mind” can you point to specific ways you’ve experienced this over the last few days? What “little decisions” to obey, to love, to thank God, to resist the flesh have you made in the last couple of days?

2. Paul says that to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace (8:6). In what ways have you experienced the peace of Christ? What was the situation? Describe what it was that made you feel peace. Were there specific texts or truths that led you to experience the peace that the Spirit gives?

3. As Pastor Ryan said in the sermon, life according to the Spirit isn’t something we’re trying to get on—this is the life of every believer. Moreover, in Romans 8:13 Paul says that “if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live.” Therefore, the believer is always seeking to put to death the deeds of the body. What “deeds of the body” are you currently seeking to put to death? Can you describe how this fight is going? Are you having joy in the fight, or do you constantly feel defeated and, perhaps, even ready to give up? How can your brothers and sisters in Christ help you press on in this fight of putting to death the deeds of the body?
